A brief post with some suggestions for people entering the realm of legit fantasy. I don't mean Game of Thrones. That series has been publicized and mainstreamed way too hard. It's also not really too fantasy-ish. Martin doesn't really delve into magic too much. The series is more about power struggles.
1. The Bartimaeus Trilogy
Perhaps one of my favorite trilogies. I read it when I was 14, so it is a quick, easy read for all the noobs who are still reading 400 page and under novels. It follows the coming of age of a young magician who learns how to enslave and control demons. In this series, the magic is all about how well the person is able to control demons of various powers. Sure fireballs and whatnot are cast by the mages, but they mainly rely on their demons to fight, defend, and rise in power within their ranks. It is also set in a modern environment, England being the main country of the series. It's really quite interesting how the author, Jonathan Stroud, manages to weave demons and magic into the modern description of humans and why normal people (muggles lol) can't see them.
2. Eragon
Kay, all I have to say about this series is: DRAGONS. If you don't like dragons, please gtfo. I love dragons. See, in this series dragons and dragon riders used to be the elite of elite, but an outcast dragonrider took his vengeance upon the Order of Riders, and basically killed them all. Now he is the Emperor and has the only dragon. A young boy, Eragon, happens to discover a dragon egg one day, and this four book series therefore follows his quest to take up arms as a new generation rider and save his kingdom. I waited a good 5-6 years for the last book to come out, and my GOD it was worth the wait. Amazing imagery, plot twists, flow, and just general awesomeness. Paolini, the author, is a complete G. I think he's only 24 also.
Yeah, so both those series are 7 books in total, should last most noobs a while. They're actually legit fantasy despite not being entirely for adults. They lack all the stupid softcore porn bullcrap in Game of Thrones (I like the series by the way, it's just not deep fantasy to me). These books also cover all the basics of fantasy: hardcore magic, dragons, imaginary monsters, and involve journeying from scrub -> leet master.
Enjoy.

G'day mates!
Why hello there! I'm Max, and I've created this blog for fun because my friend, Adam/Adumb/Applesauce/Aduncospiculum/Noob, wanted to make a blog about our love of fantasy and anything related. He's actually a giant fantasy noob, but hopefully you will enjoy his posts still despite this quality. Enjoy! :)
